        It’s Been ExtraordinaryA memoir.

A wrenching parental divorce; a minority WASP boyhood in the New York Metropolitan Region; living in Jersey City during the Depression and WW II years. Serving with the Army in the European Theater entertaining the troops as a musician-entertainer. Leading big and small bands - including stints in Catskill Borsht Belt and New England hotels accompanying Broadway and Hollywood show-biz performers.

He graduated from the Parson’s School of Design and the New York University School of Education; extending to graduate specialization in political theory. One chapter describes great teaching and inspired classroom scholarship while discussing the meaning of communism vs. capitalism.

Allan’s studies in political and the other behavioral sciences leads to work creating national political advertising - alongside involvement in local political and journalistic activity. And his commercial art training leads to a demanding and satisfying - sometime grueling - career in brand name business advertising and marketing. All this combined with constant analysis of how and why capitalism, socialism, communism and fascism has influenced business, politics and social life in Twentieth Century America.

After New Jersey and New York City experiences, Allan, with his family, moves to the southern tier of Upstate New York to live and work in Binghamton and Norwich. He continues his avocation of political and citizen activism - offering leadership in upholding the principle of separation of church and state; and lobbying for high educational standards. His key published and TV broadcast opinions about Left and Right and government policies are poignantly included in capsulated addenda. And he always finds a place to mix the lighter side of daily life with discussion of weightier subject-matter.

A fascinating story by Tom Parish
I was in my 30’s in the decade of 1980. Joe’s personal journey of enlightment and self knowledge was one common to mine for the 80’s and the 90’s.

Reading about Joe’s adventures shed new light on my own experiences. It’s his frankness of what he saw and how he feels about it in reflection that help me clarify some of my own thoughts and beliefs of the various mentors I sought during those years. Joe brings up many observations about the various high profile personal development movements and groups that most people would shy away from saying. Joe didn’t hold back.

Frankly, once I started reading the book I just couldn’t put it down. I had to finish it in a single reading.

I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book, but… by Bustani
I feel the real value in this book is in how Joe shares his learnings and experiences with many self-growth modalities. In the beginning of the book, Joe shares a few difficult experiences he had in his youth related primarily to his father. Then he moves into his experiences as a follower of Rajneesh. This is followed by his many experiences interviewing and/or participating in some of the most effective and controversial people and organizations in the human potential movement of the 70’s and 80’s. As you read his experiences you learn FROM him and THROUGH him. My only criticism is that I ran into some annoying typos. I will definitely invest in some of his other work.

Joe Vitale’s semi-autobiography by J. Meadows
I’ve been a fan of Joe Vitale’s since I first picked up Spiritual Marketing. After that came The Greatest Money-Making Secret in History! Each book brought me a clearer understanding of Joe today. Then he handed me the draft of what would eventually be titled Adventures Within.
The story answered the question, “What happened to get you where you are today?” Boy, did it ever answer it!
The first 2 chapters are pretty raw and disturbing. At first, I didn’t want to keep reading, but I’d promised Joe my thoughts and a quote on copyediting the whole book, so I continued. And am I ever glad I did. The following chapters are fascinating, evoking, thought-provoking and informative. I realized that the first 2 chapters had to be there for the readers to get the enormity of the changes as Joe gets freer and freer through his various courses of study and exploration. I think I’ve read the book 7 or 8 times, and I learn something new — about Joe and about myself — every time I read it.

Talk about SHOCK value…. by Jo Han
Joe’s new book, is in a word ’shocking’.

You will absolutely be THRILLED by this book IF:

a) You are interested in what is termed the “New Age” movement
b) You’ve tried countless “self-help” books and you’re still where you are.
c) You believe that miracles are possible.
d) You DON’T believe in miracles, because this book will make a believer of you.

You’ll be even MORE thrilled if you know Joe personally, and you THINK you really know him, because you probably don’t.

People know him as the World’s First Hypnotic Marketer, and the author of countless best selling books, but Joe will introduce you to many other people… who has shaped and moulded his belief system, namely:

a) The boxer
b) The white Witch
c) The Harry Houdini Protege
d) The World’s Greatest Preacher
e) Anand Manjushri

These are people you probably never knew existed.

As a bonus..if you read closely enough, you’ll love how Joe’s relative turned beef into fish, right in front of his very eyes!

And Joe will also take you on a cold hard objective look at the “woo woo” stuff like Fire Walking, Astral Sex…and what will REALLY bring you true happines and fulfillment.

I sincerely belive.. that unless Joe releases something else.. this is MY personal favourite book for the moment. I was not able to put down the book after going through the first chapter…and I don’t think anybody will be able to..

It’s definitely not hype to say that the first two chapters are ‘forbidden’.

In fact I was puzzled when Joe didn’t even tell me about this book…until I read it and realized why….

It’ll make you laugh, cry, squirm in discomfort.. and go “How DARE he”..

To conclude.. if you love Joe’s writings.. you MUST get this book because I really believe that this is the BEST EVER!

Get it!

Respectfully,
Jo Han Mok
Singapore

Riveting! by Becky Steiner
I am amazed. I didn’t know what to expect with this new one by Dr. Vitale. I stumbled across this one after reading his other best-sellers like “Spiritual Marketing.” well, this one sent electric shocks through me. The first two chapters alone were riveting. I couldn’t believe what Dr. Vitale had gone through.

Then the other chapters were inspiring and informative about healing blind people and walking on water and even—this was wild—astral sex.

This is the biggest book Dr. Vitale has written, except for the one he wrote on P.T. Barnum, and this may be his best. I can’t believe he wrote it 15 years ago. Anyway, I think anyone wanting a fascinating book should get “Adventures Within.”

The Ad Man who was thirty years ahead of his time. by Bruce H. Bendinger
They called him “The Socrates of San Francisco.” Howard Luck Gossage had a small advertising agency in a San Francisco firehouse. It was here that Friends of the Earth began - where the world was introduced to Marshall McLuhan. They even did some legendary advertising. Jeff Goodby wrote the intro - Stan Freberg contributed a piece - if you love what advertising could be, you just might like this book.

A Unique Book About a Unique Character by James Sadler
Howard Gossage was known as “The Socrates of San Francisco.” This book is both by and about him and anyone involved in advertising should be thanking Bruce Bendinger for pulling this book together.

Gossage, was a copywriter who emerged in the 50s and 60s. A copywriter with a social conscious who eventually started his own agency and officed in a Firehouse in San Francisco.
He introduced the world to Marshall McLuhan, helped start Friends of the Earth, and was instrumental in a number of other socially aware organizations that emerged in the sixties. He was in many ways the anti-ad man, a writer who frequently used humor to great advantage, poking fun at the products he advertised, and probably can be credited with introducing the idea of using humor as a sales tool in advertising.

Unfortunately, he died in 1969 from leukemia, but his influence lives on in advertising to this day. After this book was published, Howard Gossage was essentially rediscovered and he was named one of the Top 100 Ad People of the Century (20th Century, that is).

If you are involved in creative advertising, read this book. Heck, put it under your pillow and sleep on it. Maybe osmosis actually works.

Heartbreakingly good by Jeff J. Ong
A collection of pieces ranging from brilliant little essays to recollections about Gossage. While much of the material overlaps and reprises itself, it’s entirely worth reading. Will make you wish you could have been a maverick creative in the Iron Age of advertising…. and one of the few advertising books to elevate itself beyond its subject matter. It’s a great resource for creating, period.

Read this last… by
Read every other book about advertising creative before you read this book, because “The Book of Gossage” will spoil all those other books for you. They just won’t be as inspiring, or even as interesting.

Gossage was a fascinating man, with a fascinating life, who did incredible advertising.

Must read.

An entertaining history of a really strange man and his time by Bill Huey
Bruce Bendinger has done a real service to advertising by putting this book together. Not only does it give Gossage the attention he deserves, it gives us a capsule social history of a very interesting time. And it’s full of little nuggets like this: In addition to introducing Marshall McLuhan to the world, Gossage bought him a decent pair of black socks so that Professor M could show up to a speaking engagement without looking like a rube. An interesting time to be in San Francisco and to be in advertising. If you care at all about advertising, you’ll find this book fascinating.

A Great Inside by Jessica Garrido
I personaly thought that “Fly in the Buttermilk” was a great inside story of a great designer and professor. It was intersting to find out how he got where he is now, and all that he has done as a designer, aswell as the head of the Graphic Design Department in CSULB. At times when you think that some teachers are not on your side, you really have not met Professor Boston. He has done so much for the department that you really get the feel of how passionate he is with Graphic Design, and how valuable it is for him to teach it.

This Fly Rocks by dezign
Mr. Boston’s colloquial style is at once engaging and poignant…
True to his nature, he holds nothing back: his triumphs, disappointments
and even embarassing moments are recounted with wit and humor.

Mr. Boston deserves his role as pioneer: not only as a Black man,
but also as Chronicler of a crucial moment in Advertising where Social Consciousness
married Visual Communications and laid the foundation
for activism today. Too often Graphic Design literature focuses on the work, and by inference on the client, and not enough on
the people behind the work…

you haven’t bought this book yet? by brad benjamin
When my book arrived, I had the intent of reading just a few pages, I had to force myself to put it down over halfway through just so I could get some work done. I easily finished it in the first available moment I had. This book will take you on a journey through the life of Old Skool Archie Boston, and the moments that shaped his career and work. Also included is his … portfolio that puts polital-correctness in it’s place. Motivational, tragic, humorous and historical- this book is recommended for designers, advertisers and design educators alike. Buy this book today.

Wonderful! by Jennifer Garrido
This book was a wonderful look on the inside of a designers life! It made me aware of how much politics there is in a University, and how much Archie Boston did for Graphis Designers in general. From reading this book he has truly made me realize what a master he is in what he treaches. Not only does he teach it well, but he loves to teach it and it really shows.

Buttermilk rating the Fly by ante rotim
Read it this winter break and it was well worth my time. I picked the book up with the intent of reading a few pages and was just sucked in. It informed me a “white boy” from the burbs on life from a different perspective. The book showcases classic and award winning graphic design projects. Also has plenty of motivational ammunition for YOU to do good and succeed in life and in graphic design.

I say two thumbs up.
